But if this is the case Graeber argues, then why has the development of market liberalism gone hand in hand with an unprecedented and continuous expansion of bureaucracy? The overall effect of this on society has been the predominance of a kind of realist cynicism: according to Graeber, a realist political ontology, based on the inevitability of violence and the need for power structures to deal with it, is the essence of right-wing thought (87-8). by Melville House Her ...Where does the desire for endless rules, regulations, and bureaucracy come from? Naive, young, libertarian me understood this to be a debate on whether Israel is in danger of a revolution. I say invisible because the rules by which bureaucracy is governed so often go unseen and unquestioned.

More generally, his claim is that bureaucratization allows for the ‘engineering’ of debts through the collusion of public and private power in order to facilitate the extraction of profits (24). Graeber is a highly innovative thinker who is trying to break down epistemological barriers to how we perceive hidden structures of power. In the essay ‘Of Flying Cars and the Declining Rate of Profit’ Graeber is analyzing ‘endogenous technological change.’ Lots of other social theorists and political economists have understood that capitalism and the profit-motive usurps the emancipatory potential of technology. What I read though, was a a bunch of thrown together essays written stream of consciousness style, jumbles of logic with vague points leading nowhere, and statements of caricature masquerading as fact, and several fantastical 'rebuttal' arguments with fictional critics.
It was published by Melville House and released on February 24, 2015.
I'm sure my fellow riders took me for a little off my rocker as I was nodding furiously or chuckling frequently at the descriptions of bureaucratic stupidity so completely familiar. Let us know what’s wrong with this preview of How did we come to spend so much of our time filling out forms?Where does the desire for endless rules, regulations, and bureaucracy come from? *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Reading it was thus an excellent, enlightening experience. This book wasn't quite as good as Debt, which is one of my favorite books, but does a really spectacular job of showing the invisible structure created by bureaucracy.
This is the third book by Graeber that I have read the other two books being, "Bullshit Jobs", and "Debt". Graeber has a knack for bringing together various aspects of contemporary life in a compelling critical vision of capitalist society.

Sitting just millimeters behind my left ear, for example, as I scan my Outlook for nuggets of relevant information buried in the torrent of internal corporate messaging. Unlike many high profile intellectuals and activists, he also doesn't turn a blind eye from his current place in the system he often critiques and urges conversations about.I want to nominate David Graeber as national treasure. The overwhelming number of stars and praise for The Utopia of Rules seems to justify it.
1612193749 This book is an essential read for a deeper understanding of the not only the obviously wealth disparity in the country (how we got here-- not entirely on purpose it seems), but the failures of democracy under capitalism, how and where marxism falls short, and why humans seem to be obsessed with creating bureaucracy. It was a really enjoyable read and I certainly learned a few things from it.
To put it rather simplistically, capitalists realized that technological development has liberating potential, and decided that they would rather stall technological progress than see the end of capitalism.
Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. But then, I'm no sociologist, so I guess I'm not qualified to judge. And why is it that even when we try to get rid of rules, paperwork, "red tape," and bureaucracy, we always seem to get more?
Not only was he responsible for planning the Occupy Wall Street movement and coining the slogan, "We are the 99%," but Graeber is one of those rare academic writers who writes clearly and entertainingly.

The second essay, ‘Of Flying Cars and the Declining Rate of Profit’, makes a closely related point. The First 5,000 Years comes a revelatory account of the way bureaucracy rules our lives Where does the desire for endless rules, ... of 'secret joys' for most of us."

But what an infuriating and disappointing book! Two of these essays (on flying cars and Batman) I had read and re-read in The Baffler and The New Inquiry, enough times that I feel confident in saying both have 20-30% more material than the originalNot quite as mind-expanding as either Debt or Graeber's under-appreciated (at least on Goodreads) book on value theory, but still brimming with novel ideas, erudite in an off-beat way (topics range from Madagascar to the postal service to Dungeons & Dragons), and most of all incredibly fun to read. The Utopia of Rules: On Technology, Stupidity, and the Secret Joys of Bureaucracy
etc. I think that some of the conspiracy-theory type implications of the third essay suggest a rather loose grasp of history, as conspiracy theories often do.I'm hesitant to recommend this book.
