"Italian Shoes" is a much different work. Filled with interesting characters, not to mention Italian shoes (! The character development is subtle and spot on as you are drawn into the main character's life and come to understand the choices he has made. This book produced a number of vivid and often bizarre images for me. It made me quite sad and I don't really know what to think about it. "Italian Shoes" is a much different work. But footprints in the snow one fine morning changes his life forever...the book is meant to be slow, taking the reader through all the emotions of cold biting winter and cold biting remembrance of a life which was filled with sunshine...the ant hill, a dog and cat his only companions...i instantly loved this tale, then towards the middle kind of was wondering where all this is leading to...but then just went with the flow of the book...and was so glad i did...as its marvelous..and i know that if you are pondering on whether to spend your time or money on this book, then by all means do it....you wont be disappointed. A wonderful story of a retired doctor living a solitary existence on a remote Swedish island, who thinks he has removed himself from life, when an old woman appears on the ice pushing a walker. Excellent narration by veteran audiobook narrator, Henry Strozier. Both are superb, but his last book would have been more meaningful to me if I had read 'Italian Shoes ' first. It may be unusual in that the two most important characters are both old. Fredrik Welin has been living on a small rocky Swedish island with no houses in sight. Here is a list of the most memorable: the desolate island seascape; the cold white of the bitter winter; the living room with the ant hill slowly consuming the table cloth; Jansson, the hypochondriac postman with the hydrocopter and his many layers of clothes; Fredrik chopping a hole in the ice and bathing in the icy sea water just to remind himself that he is alive; the appearance of Harriet after 37 years, standing with her walker on the ice, looking at Fredrik; Fredrik frantically hauling Harriet into his cabin when she collapses on the ice; Fredrik and Harriet on their quest to visit the forest pool of Fredrik's youth; Harriet making her way to the center of the frozen pool with her walker, then improbably rescuing Fredrik after he falls through the ice; their time in the back seat of a car parked on a logging road, so different from the experiences of youth; Fredrik's first glimpse of Louise in her pink dressing gown and high heeled shoes, emerging from her caravan in the woods; the snow covered outdoor boxing ring in the woods; Giaconelli's workshop in the abandoned village; Fredrik, Louise, and Harriet sleeping in the caravan's one bed, Sima running at Fredrik with a samurai sword, calling him a pedophile; the successful Mid-Summer party in honor of Harriet, the tender care given Harriet by Fredrik and Louise; a do-it-yourself cremation.
I wish Mankell was still around. Maybe that's the mystery! I enjoyed every setting, every bit of back-and-forth dialogue, the animals and pets that are interwoven, and even the fringe characters who added just enough. Suddenly, and very unexpectedly, he now has a family. I think Mankell wanted to write about a charmless man in his late sixties who finally gets his comeuppance, so to speak. The only regular contact he has is with Jansson, a postman who delivers what little mail he gets. Start by marking “Italian Shoes” as Want to Read:
Seine Taschenbücher erscheinen bei dtv.Mankell is a vivid and compelling storyteller Independent Full disclosure: if you're looking for a sunny book about rainbows, fluff and feathers, you've come to the wrong place. As a result, he had all the time in the world to contemplate. In many ways this book reminds me of Mankell's series about Joel Gustafsson.
In this well-written story, a retired surgeon, living alone on his own rocky island, is forced to confront his girlfriend from 50 years ago when she suddenly shows up unannounced, and from that point on, the man's life changes indefinitely. The first of these events occurs early in the story when Harriet, his great love, steps off the mail boat and back into his life after 35+ years. His solitary existence is over. Frederick Welin is a surgeon, now retired, who lives on a Swedish island.
It focuses on a retired surgeon who left his profession in disgrace and lives alone on a small island in the Stockholm archipelago.
If you enjoyed Italian Shoes, the new Henning Mankell novel featuring Fredrik Welin, After the Fire, is available now. One day he sees a woman on the ice coming towards him.
He retreated from the world twelve years ago after making a terrible mistake as a surgeon. I loved this book for many reasons.
This is the story of Fredrik Welin, a man in his sixties living alone on a tiny, ice-bound Swedish island after a catastrophic mistake, who is suddenly visited by a woman from way back in his past. :))Any five-star book is worth reading again, and this one certainly is. ITALIAN SHOES OK, I admit, I read it in translation.
The writing, at times sparse, at times lyrical, always wonderful, pushed this novel from a 4 to a 5 star for me.
Jansson is a hypochondriac who regularly has Welin check him out even though his health is excellent.
The character development is subtle and spot on as you are drawn into the main character's life and come to understand the choices Swedish author Henning Mankell is known for his Kurt Wallander mystery series, books I intend to check out even though I am not a huge fan of the genre.
