I purchased this famous film as it had acquired a special and honored reputation, has Scorcese's praise, and is newly available in a carefully restored print available in Blu-ray format. Glorious production designs by Hein Heckroth. We were transfixed.
Having read many of the wonderful reviews here and watched the outstanding Covent Garden Production with Domingo, Baltsa et al, I approached this production with a degree of caution, even some scepticism.I am totally converted.
For me, the Royal Opera performance with Placido Domingo in the lead role is superior and more enjoyable to watch in the mechanical doll episode. The attempt to merge opera and ballet together doesn't always synchronise well. This is Powell and Pressburger's (and Beecham's) take on the Offenbach opera (sung here in English)---quirky, but cinematically brilliant. If you own any other edition, scrap it & get this one.
Great imagination, production, enthusiasm, and fine musical and dance performances combine to make 'Tales of Hoffmann' an all around outstanding film spectacle. In the peaceful countryside, Vassily opposes the rich kulaks over the coming of collective farming.
We now know considerably more about Offenbach's authentic "Contes d'Hoffmann" score than was known when this film was made----but it remains a classic piece of music cinema. This a film version of the opera "The Tales of Hoffmann", however it is NOT just a film of a staged performance. I have to admit, I really prefer the more recent editions of this work that use theI know this is a beautiful work of art!

The video is phenomenal, with incomparable color and looks gorgeous in hi-def.
It is wonderful to see Frederick Ashton, Robert Helpmann and Leonide Massine in acting roles in which they excel.
