had to watch it with an english major before it was somewhat explained...basically, PSH's character is spending his life looking for approval/confirmation/whatnot from everyone, and he's afraid to live life as well (hence all his weird ailments and such, excuses from just living) whereas his wife/daughter/that box office chick who wanted to bang him at the beginning just go balls out and live life without worrying.
