Rainfall amounts will be small across south-eastern areas, while the north-west will receive the highest totals. After some chilly nights recently, the middle of this week will be milder at night and a little warmer by day in the south. But winds will flick back around to a cooler north-westerly direction by Friday and the weekend.Temperatures will drop away again, with the risk of a slight air frost in some sheltered glens of eastern Scotland on Sunday morning.A mixture of sunny intervals and a few showers this weekend, but out of the wind and in the sunshine, it will feel pleasant. The first half of this week will feature something of a north-to-south split in the UK's weather.Across the south, a large high pressure ridge is looking increasingly likely to build for a few days, leading to the weather settling down. This will be especially true across the far south of Wales and southern England. As warmer air from the sub-tropical Atlantic moves north-eastwards into this high pressure area, daytime temperatures should rise into at least the low 20Cs again in southern England.Further north, the first half of next week will see increased westerly winds, more extensive cloud cover and some rain at times; a harbinger of what is to come for all of us later in the week.Following the chilly mornings up north on Sunday 6th and Monday 7th September, milder air will arrive, and the risk of local air frosts will fade. The second half of the week will see the high pressure ridge and warm, dry weather in the south being swept away. There is only a slight chance this will hold until the weekend. More likely is that several large Atlantic low pressure areas spin up close to the UK, driving brisk westerly winds, heavy rain and cooler air across all parts by the end of the week.It is a bit too early to tell if this early autumn wind storm will rival the intensity of "Storm Ellen" and "Storm Francis" that affected the UK in August. But it's worth keeping a close eye on our forecast updates. The second half of September is now more likely to see low pressure remain quite stubborn and close to the UK on many days, especially in the north. We suspect that a couple of short-lived high pressure ridges will build up across the UK from time to time, leading to interludes of dry and settled weather. But, the most persistent ridges of high pressure will park themselves over the central north Atlantic and over western Russia. So, we should be prepared for changeable weather, with bouts of strong winds and heavy rain, a few cool snaps and a lack of sustained dry, calm and warm conditions. It is worth noting that confidence in the forecast detail is lower than normal throughout the second half of September. This uncertainty is partly driven by an extremely active North Atlantic hurricane season, which is already in full swing.Activity tends to peak during September, and this can have knock-on effects on the weather patterns here in the UK.A ramp-up in the north Atlantic jet stream in September is one symptom of an active hurricane season. This usually brings deep areas of low pressure towards the British Isles on several occasions in the month, so we could see more notable wind and rain events. But an active hurricane season also reduces the accuracy of month-ahead forecasts.
