The wax cylinder recordings of Tasmanian Aborigine, Fanny Cochrane Smith, are some of the earliest recordings ever made in Australia, and the only sound recording of the traditional Tasmanian Aboriginal language - preserving this language for time immemorial. Her funeral cortège was followed by more than 400 people and she is still remembered warmly as 'one of nature's ladies' who could entertain any gathering with her sparkling eyes and ready wit. Since the 1990s, Tasmanian Aboriginal people including Theresa Sainty, Jenny Longey and June Sculthorpe have worked to restore language to their community. Once Fanny gained her freedom, it became apparent that she also had an entrepreneurial flair.Fanny married her English sawyer husband, William, at the age of 20, and they had 11 children – 6 boys and 5 girls. Fanny Cochrane-Smith (1834-1905) was born on Flinders Island. Even though her descendants kept watch on it, it became the target for thieves and minor vandalism until 1998, when Rodney Dillon, then the Tasmanian Commissioner for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC), sought funds to purchase the church and the surrounding land. Perhaps the most well-known are Mathinna; William (or Billy) Lanne; and Fanny Cochrane-Smith.

She is considered to be the last fluent speaker of the Flinders island lingua franca, a Tasmanian language, and her wax cylinder recordings of songs are the only audio recordings of any of Tasmania 's indigenous languages.
