I started with Pyramid, which though written retrospectively, fleshed out the early years of detective Henning Mankell does indeed do that for me with his Inspector Kurt Wallander.There's something about Swedish authors that both fascinates me and tugs at my heartstrings.

He's in less than good health - he's a diabetic - and he's not sure he approves of his daughter's new boyfriend. However, Wallander's obsessive pursuit of the owner of a car used in the revenge killing yields a result, though it almost costs him his job and the Lovgrens' slayers are finally cornered in a fairground.

Welcome back. At forty-two-years old he shouldn't feel as apathetic as he does, but with a separation from his wife, sporadic contact and relations with his daughter, Linda, and with a father characterised by erratic mood changes and almost impossible expectations, he doesn't have much to smile about. Wallander's journey through aging and weight-gain is equality a roller coaster as solving the murder.

Faceless Killers is a worthwhile read for those who've come to the Wallander series late, perhaps through the recent BBC series with Kenneth Branaugh, or as a re-read for long-time series fans. The police officers are barely differentiated (Wallander himself is the only one with any character traits to speak of, and he comes across as kind of a schmuck), and the book cries out for description and emotion. Prior to 70's-80's-Bond-movie-super-villains living in rural Skåne or terrorist organizations in the same area, there was a down-to-earth-Wallander who worked a nasty and seemingly unsolvable double homicide on an elderly couple on a farm.
