Residents in the Pilbara are still on red alert on Sunday morning as Tropical Cyclone Damien tracks further inland.The red alert warning is still in place for people in or near Whim Creek to Mardie and south to Pannawonica including Pannawonica, Whim Creek, Point Samson, Cossack, Wickham, Roebourne, Karratha and Dampier.Despite the danger some, Pilbara residents are making the most of the trying conditions, posting amusing videos to social media.
BOM has announced the all 'all clear with caution' for the areas of Whim Creek, Point Samson, Cossack, Wickham, Roebourne, Karratha and Dampier, east to Yule River, south to Wittenoom and west to Fortescue.A blue alert remains current for people in Fortescue and Paraburdoo (including Tom Price) to Nullagine and Marble Bar (not including Nullagine and Marble Bar) in the Pilbara.Residents and businesses have been advised that there may be hazards from damage and flooding that have not yet been identified.Damien is expected to weaken below cyclone intensity by Sunday afternoon but red alerts remain in parts of central Pilbara and northeast Gascoyne.After making landfall Saturday afternoon, Damien left a trail of destruction and residents in WA's north are now faced with picking up the pieces.Red alerts remain for people in or near Whim Creek, Point Samson, Cossack, Wickham, Roebourne, Karratha and Dampier.Damien is now a Category 1 about 15 kilometres west of Tom Price and 55 kilometres north of Paraburdoo and is moving to the south southeast at 16 kilometres per hour.Damaging winds with gusts up to 100 kilomoteres an hour are occurring over parts of the central Pilbara, including Tom Price, and these will extend further south into the northeast Gascoyne.By Sunday morning, the Bureau of Meteorology predicted Damien would further weaken by the afternoon as it moves in a south south-east direction further inland.The tropical cyclone brought torrential rain and wind gusts up to 220 kilometres per hour and left about 9500 people in Baynton, Nickol, Pegs Creek, Millars Well, Bulgarra, Roebourne and the Burrup Peninsula without power.Heavy rain is likely to cause flooding in the Pilbara and Gascoyne.As today's live cyclone coverage concludes, residents in storm-affected areas are reminded to stay up to date with warnings and stay safe.The weather forecasts will continue to be monitored, with further advice to be issued if there is a change to the situation.Residents between Dampier and Whim Creek, including Dampier and Karratha, are warned of the potential of a very dangerous storm tide as the cyclone centre crosses the coast.Tides are likely to rise significantly above the normal high tide mark with damaging waves and very dangerous flooding.Heavy rain is likely to cause flooding in the Pilbara and Gascoyne as the cyclone moves inland over the weekend.Flood watches and warnings are current, please refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/wa/warnings/ for further details.As the eye of Cyclone Damien passes over Karratha, thousands - including journalists at the local ABC - are without power.At 4pm category 3 Cyclone Damien has sustained winds near the centre of 150 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 205 kilometres per hour.It is within 20 kilometres of 20.7 degrees South, 116.7 degrees East , 15 kilometres west northwest of Karratha and 200 kilometres east northeast of Onslow.The system is moving south southeast at 16 kilometres per hour .This video of TC Damien blowing in a window has been viewed 35,000 times and shared almost 400 times on Facebook.Cyclone Damien closes in on WA coast with Pilbara on red alertDangerous tides are expected to impact areas in the cyclone's path. Images posted on social media show there are multiple trees down in the Karratha townsite and some properties have lost roofs.About 850 customers are still without power, with crews poised to begin restoration work once the red alert has been lifted, according to Horizon Power.Cyclone Damien is currently a weakening category one system moving south, south east at 16km/h, and is 15km west of Tom Price and 55kms north of Paraburdoo. Gales occurred along the Pilbara coast from early morning on 8 February, with Barrow Island, Mardie, Varanus Island, Karratha Airport, Roebourne Airport and Legendre Island all recording a period of sustained gales.
Neil Bennett from the Bureau of Meteorology said the cyclone would continue to weaken as it moved south during the day and was likely to be downgraded to below tropical cyclone intensity during Sunday afternoon.
