Singer Gabrielle is as famous for her songs as her sleek look.One part of her image has always been an eye covering – whether that came in the form of an eye patch or a heavy fringe.If you’re wondering the reason why she always keeps one eye under cover, we’ve found out for you.Gabrielle – or Louise Gabrielle Bobb as she was born – apparently keeps one eye covered due to a condition called ptosis.Ptosis is a condition where the eyelid may droop or fall.The eyeball itself is not affected, but it might cause minor visual impairments.However, in an interview on Loose Women in January 2019, ‘The eye patch I only ever used for a year,’ she said, adding, ‘and a lot of people find that hard to believe.’According to former interviews, the covering of the eye was for confidence reasons rather than health.Gabrielle has previously mentioned that she was the target of comments at school, but says that she didn’t feel like it was bullying:‘It’s funny, I never saw myself as being bullied. Sign up today for the best stories straight to your inboxIt’s hard to believe that nineties soul icon Gabrielle will be turning 50 next year.The Dreams singer said she “can’t wait” to hit the milestone birthday as she is “loving life” as she takes on the charts once more after taking a musical hiatus in recent years.The chart-topping songstress caught up with Daily Star Online about her new music as well as revealing all about her famous eye patch.Gabrielle (Lousie Gabrielle Bobb) initially divulged how she is feeling “very rock and roll” at the moment after performing a series of packed-out gigs in Birmingham.It’s perhaps no wonder that Gabrielle still has such a cult following, considering she has smashed out hit after hit in the past.From debut single Dreams which reached number one in the UK singles charts in 1993, to gaining a second number one with Rise in 2001 and then wowing once more with Bridget Jones Diary track Out of Reach that same year.She is releasing a new album Under My Skin which she describes as “Classic Gabrielle”, after candidly admitting that she tried her hand at the Country and Indie genres in the past but it wasn’t received well by fans.She said: “I will be returning to my roots and people have already tweeted me telling me how much they like it so it just feels amazing.”With candour on the menu, Gabrielle also lifted the lid on her signature eye patch, which she wears on account of an eye condition.“Honey, if I go out of the house without my eye patch it would be like not wearing any knickers for me!“You know what I mean, but that’s my personal choice.”“When I was younger, I used to get – not bullied, but, I used to go to an all girls’ school so I’m a woman’s woman and yet you’d find that hard to believe that even as much as I intend on being a woman’s woman, I was surrounded by a lot of witches and bitches.”She added: “And it’s funny how girls can be their own worst enemy.”Gabrielle then insisted that the comments from “mean girls didn’t deter” her.She said: “I had to put up with comments about my eye, but it didn’t break me, it made me strong.”“And the fact that I had the cheek in these girls’ eyes to think that I could be a singer, and turning attention to the problem that people used to make my life hell, I felt empowered.”Gabrielle also divulged how her mum tried to deter her from rocking the eye patch but she refused to listen.“I didn’t care, I felt strong.
