Tragic destiny in a larger-than-life man plagued by doubts over his own decisions, his consuming passions, is the universal here; the gripping story of Alexander the historical incidental, as it were. The historical Alexander has been compressed into a 3 hour+ film, so the history has been simplified and condensed (perhaps too much), but the result is still a very powerful and emotional work.

Other than that this is total car crash of a movie. At a reported cost of $155 million, Alexander qualifies as a super-spectacle in every respect but one -- namely in its neurotic, confused and sexually ambidextrous hero. They will simply fail to understand. As the titular conqueror, Colin Farrell shows the limit of his screen presence as he falters in such big boots and winds up face first in the sand. Normally I like Anthony Hopkins, Rosario Dawson, and even Val Kilmer sometimes but not much here. Classics, That aside, I think the movie is visually spectacular without too much CGI.
